Automated Repository for Storage and Archiving of Human Genomic DNA

One consequence of completing the human genome project will be a corresponding need for purified human genomic DNA as a starting material for scientific studies. While investigators can acquire this material from several channels, one very attractive resource will be where both genomic DNA and the donor's background or personal information can be simultaneously obtained. In order to provide large amounts and numbers of purified genomic DNA samples necessary for investigators, a facility was designed which could maximize use of robotics to integrate a number of automated laboratory operations. These include the analysis, dilution, archival storage, and retrieval of human genomic DNA specimens. Numerous factors must be considered when creating such a system including the variety of automated instrumentation, type of robotic automation, speed of system, number of samples processed/year, format for distribution of samples, etc. The development and optimum use of a robotics system to integrate all of these activities into a seamless automated operation is outlined in this poster.
