Theodore Mifflin

Theodore E. Mifflin, Ph.D., DABCC received a B.S. in Chemistry (1968) from Weber State University in Ogden Utah. After 5 years in the US Army, he spent 4 years in private medical reference laboratories before returning to pursue graduate studies in 1977. He completed a PhD in physical biochemistry in 1983 from Utah State University and accepted a postdoctoral position at the University of Virginia Medical Center in clinical chemistry. In 1986, he was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at UVa where he started UVa's molecular diagnostics laboratory. In 1991, he moved to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as Associate Professor to create and direct a molecular genetics laboratory. In 1997, he returned to the Medical Automation Research Center at UVa as Director of Molecular Automation Division. He has 61 publications and has received a number of awards including Ernest Cotlove Award from the AACC, Outstanding Speaker Award (AACC), and Young Investigator Award (ACLPS). He is a Diplomate certified by American Board in Clinical Chemistry and previously held a Certificate of Qualification as a Laboratory Director from the NY State Department of Health. His primary interests are in using robotics and automation to enhance molecular diagnostic assay performance and use of DNA arrays and chips for clinical diagnostics.
